For starters, his nickname was Jack.
At this time, many foreign names had alternate ways of spelling.
The biggest confusion came from the fact that Saltis was pronounced
"shaltis". In Lithuanian,
the initial s had an sh sound to it. When
John was baptized, it was performed by a Polish priest.
In Polish, the sh sound is created by sz resulting in the
"Szaltis" spelling.
